Heartache in the Heartland

My grandfather’s hands worked the land
he was the finest man I ever knew

His heart would break if he could see
what our Heartland’s going through

The family farm is lost forever I fear
now corporate executives rule the land

It’s all stockholders and profit margins
this bottom line farming is out of hand

Selling genetically engineered produce
and ever assuring us that all is right

With our “mad” scientists playing God
sometimes it’s hard to sleep at night

With heartless, efficient, production
will our nation’s very soul be lost

This way of life may be gone for good
I wonder is progress worth the cost
